Lucy is great and I love her but this was the most embarrassing moment in her career. She's too old to be Mame and her singing is the shit. Frankly, I feel sorry Bea had to sing with her instead of Angela, who no doubt would have made the movie much better than Lucy did.

What a disappointment this file is, yet it have terrifically funny moments. I can agree with the general opinion that Lucy is a great performer, but she is simply NOT Mame Dennis. Its a different type of humor. Where Lucy is unbeatable at broad comedy, Mame is comedy of high style and brittle sophistication. Also, Lucy's voice betrays the thousands of cigarettes she smoked over the previous 40 years and even in moments where her comedic instincts shine her voice sounds strained and tired.

I'm only 17 and I've loved this movie ever since my grandparents showed it to me. Bea Arthur is wonderful in this role, and Lucy did alright although I agree she was too old. The first time I saw it I kept wondering why the screen seemed to get blurry whenever the camera focused on her, lol.

There's an interview with Bea Arthur on YT where she talks about the film; basically, she did it because her husband was the director and he asked her to do it. She thought it was a disaster and an embarrassment and shares the opinion that Lucy was miscast in the role. At the end, interviewer asks her if she has any regrets, and this movie is the first thing out of her mouth.

Alright, alright....I think we're all agreed that Lucy is no Angela Lansbury when it come to singing and no Rosalind Russell when it comes to beauty, but I think it's important to look at what Lucy brought to this role in this depiction and that was her inimitable charm and humor. Neither Angela nor Ros could equal the comic edge that Lucille Ball brought, however flawed, fuzzy and frog-voiced, to this performance. I think it stands on its own.

Terrific critique! I liked several characters in this version, over the more highly acclaimed "Auntie Mame", including Lucy's part! I love this scene--highlight movie for me I'd say~:)

This is my first time watching the original with Bea Arthur and Lucille Ball. I watched the performance with Bea Arthur and Angela Lansbury first. Honestly I like both of them. Lucille Ball's singing ability is definately not up to par with Lansbury's. Because it was a humorous song I didnt find any harm in her being off key. Bea Arthur did a marvelous job in both remditions.I look forward to seeing the entire film.

You got that right. It's like night and day, isn't it. Next week I'll be seeing the sparkling "Auntie Mame" Starring Rosalind Russell at the Egytian Theater in Hollywood. Time to break out the champagne and celebrate "Auntie Mame"'s 50th anniversary!

Rosalind Russell by all accounts should have won the Academy Award for "Auntie Mame", but comedies rarely get the recognition they deserve. "Auntie Mame" is to me the funniest movie of all time.
